Correctly named and formatted files placed in these directories (termed "Loose files") will override files inside the default Fallout 4 BSA's as well as DLC's and other mods distributed with bsa's.Ī Docs directory is useful for storing all documentation, if you are using Wrye Bash to install it will automatically rename all readme's to "modname" readme.txt and place them there. These directories include: Grass, Interface, LODsettings, Meshes, Music, Scripts, Shadersfx, Sound, Strings, and Textures. These directories may not be created by default however, when they are, they function in a special way. There are several important directories in Fallout 4\Data. Do not play with ini settings until after you have read and understood the section on tweaking the inis! It doesn't take long, and it's not a lot of reading, but it will save you many hours of headaches. By default, these are set to 5, and increasing them without adjusting other values in the INI file can have catastrophic consequences on your save game.

ESP files are always dependent upon ESM files (usually Fallout 4.esm), and modify items, creatures, and/or places already present.ESM files are master files (meaning they go as high up as possible in the load order after the official ESMs like Fallout 4, Update.esm, and the DLCs, unless the mod's installation instructions say otherwise! And yes, you must follow instructions when installing any mod-the first things you should look at are compatibility and install instructions to make sure you know what is changing, and how.
